How To Minimize Car Thefts?

car thief

There are possibly five main reasons why a person may try to steal your car. Therefore it is better to try and understand these reasons and have a better idea which cars are more likely to be stolen, and to help you from having your car stolen.

Joyriding

This is something that happens and the offenders of this like to think of it as a prank or a way of showing of to their friends. They think nothing of breaking into a car to drive around in just for fun. The car is often found in the same area within a day or two. Unfortunately for the owner of the car this is not always a celebration as the car may have been damaged in some way.

Transportation

One reason why a car can get stolen is for transportation, a car is often used this way for a thief or thieves to use it for transportation from one place to another. For example if they have committed a burglary and want to use it as a getaway vehicle, often they get to a destination then abandon it. They may have chosen the car because keys had been left in the ignition, or a window that was easy to open, either way the same rule applies to all car owners double check your car before leaving it anywhere.

Other crimes

There are other reasons why a car may be stolen, for example as already mentioned a getaway car for a burglary. There are certain areas where your car is more likely to be stolen than other areas; drug crime can be another reason for car stealing. Quite often again your car may be found not to far from where it was stolen, but again there may be a lot or little damage to it.

Parts

A car can be stolen for parts, usually a car is hotwired driven away to a garage somewhere and then stripped of parts that the thief will then sell on like, parts of the engine, radio, stereo any parts that the thief thinks they can sell. The car may eventually be found but it can take weeks or months if it has been hidden away somewhere.

Commercial Theft

This type of car theft is usually high powered and expensive cars that the thieves target. Quite often these are gangs of thieves who know exactly which type of cars they are looking for, in order for them to be resold. They will take the car somewhere to file of serial numbers, change locks and even the number plates may get changed. If this happens to you there may be a chance that you do not see your car again.
